Fire Safety and Education

Educating Our Community

In 2001 the fire department began to evaluate community involvement in the schools with Fire Safety. It was then determined that a new program was needed to inform kids and teachers of the importance of fire safety. With the help of a hand full off duty firefighters a new program was introduced to the children of Whitfield County.

The program was started by Lt. Shawn Damon, and Lt. Chris West, which introduced children grades K-3rd to the fun side of fire safety, with clowns, puppets, songs, and a little dance. The program has grown from a four man show in 2001 to a current production that can take as many as twelve members to put on a single 45-minute show. The skits touch on many fire safety concerns like, not playing with matches, having two ways out, making sure you have working smoke detectors, and not to play with stoves. Each year we try to change the show to highlight a different subject but always try to teach the basic ways to stay fire safe. This program is available to all Whitfield County Schools and reaches thousands of children each year and continues to grow each year to meet the ever-expanding population of our school system.
